Case Study — General Industries

How Four Winds helped a major water desalination partner turn logistical ideas into reality.

Summary

Four Winds' history in water desalination projects proved that anything can be moved and transferred to the customer's satisfaction. Transferring more than 45,000 line items with over 100,000 pieces from the client's old warehouse to a new warehouse — with a different process flow and special handling requirements — Four Winds proved once again that there is no item too small, too big, too sensitive or too difficult for its people to handle and move.

Challenges

  • Manage inventory across more than 45,000 line items
  • Cleaning, tagging, arranging and labeling of all materials
  • Transferring from the old to the new warehouse and serially arranging materials

Solutions & Results

  • Cleaning water desalination materials was a priority before transferring; old pallets, packing materials and boxes were replaced and arranged in order.
  • The inventory system was managed by Four Winds logistics specialists — before transferring, a full inventory was completed to ensure quantities balanced for the new records.
  • Client materials were arranged serially in their locations as the customer required; thousands of kinds of materials were carefully arranged by Four Winds logistics specialists.
  • Every material was tagged with its location, part number and description — the basis on which the barcode system was programmed.
  • Sticker labels were applied so locations could be identified easily, even outside the bin boxes and pallets.
  • Four Winds prepared new records for the beginning balance of the client's new warehouse.

Getting Started

The customer and the Four Winds project manager met and agreed on an action plan and duration. Within this period, the old warehouse had to be inventoried, tagged and barcoded, the warehouse re-designed, and all materials placed in their new locations.

Four Winds carefully transferred and moved all materials — small, big, sensitive, and even materials that needed special handling. With heavy equipment, trucks, forklifts and experienced people, Four Winds handled the transfer and movement of all client materials.

Working Together for Lean Warehouse Management

After the warehouse move was finished, Four Winds continued to work with the client on their inbound freight forwarding requirements and on finding cost-effective solutions for their logistics needs.
