How Does a Move From Saudi Arabia to Bahrain Work?
Every household move by road between the two kingdoms crosses the King Fahd Causeway, the 25 km, four-lane link that runs from Al-Aziziyah, south of Khobar, to Al-Jasra in Bahrain. Saudi and Bahraini customs and immigration both sit on Passport Island in the middle of the causeway, and one-stop clearance has been in place there since March 2017. The crossing runs 24 hours a day, so trucks are not limited to daytime border slots.
How long the road part takes depends mostly on where your move starts:
| Origin city | Road distance to Manama | Driving time by car | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dammam | ~71 km | ~50 minutes | Through Khobar to the causeway |
| Riyadh | ~460 km | ~4 hours | East to the Eastern Province, then the causeway |
| Jeddah | ~1,400 km | ~13.5 hours | Across the kingdom via Riyadh, then the causeway |
The times above are for a car. A loaded moving truck drives slower and has to stop for customs inspection at the border. Four Winds Saudi Arabia can pack and load your home at origin with our movers in Dammam, our Riyadh moving crews or our Jeddah movers team. One company then handles the shipment from the first box to delivery in Bahrain.
What Documents Do You Need to Clear Household Goods in Bahrain?
Bahrain does not charge customs duty on used personal effects and household goods when you are moving your residence to the country and you own the items. The goods have to arrive within 6 months of your own arrival in Bahrain. Tobacco and vehicles are not covered by the exemption and must be declared separately.
For a household goods shipment, prepare:
- A passport copy showing the signature page and your Bahrain work, entry or residence visa
- A copy of your CPR card (front and back) and your endorsed residence permit
- A packing list or inventory in English
- The bill of lading or road consignment note
- A signed authorization letter and customs declaration for your mover
- A letter from your employer to Customs Affairs if your work permit is still pending
- A lease agreement if you live in Bahrain but work in Saudi Arabia
New items in the shipment are charged 5% customs duty plus 10% VAT. Bahrain Customs offices and the port are closed on Fridays and Saturdays, so a truck that reaches the border late on Thursday may wait until Sunday for final clearance. Our customs clearance team in Bahrain prepares the file before the truck leaves Saudi Arabia. You can check the full rules on the Bahrain Customs Affairs relocation instructions page.
What Can’t You Bring Into Bahrain?
Bahrain customs will hold or confiscate restricted items, which can delay the release of the whole shipment. Do not pack:
- Narcotics, flammable liquids, gas cylinders and other dangerous goods
- Firearms, swords, daggers, knives sold as weapons, arrows and darts
- Ivory and products made from protected species
- Pornography, nude statues or paintings, and pirated discs
- Wireless equipment such as satellite receivers, walkie-talkies and some cordless phones
- Military clothing and gambling games
Medicines are allowed only with a prescription written in Arabic or English. Keep passports, CPR cards, jewelry and cash with you instead of on the truck. For a broader list of what movers will refuse to load, read our guide to non-allowable items you should not pack.
Can You Move Your Car to Bahrain With Your Household Goods?
Yes, but a car is cleared under separate rules because the household goods exemption does not cover vehicles. According to the FIDI customs guide for Bahrain:
- Only left-hand-drive vehicles can be imported.
- The car is charged 5% customs duty plus 10% VAT on its CIF value.
- You need insurance from a Bahrain insurer before clearance.
- The owner has to attend the vehicle inspection.
- Temporary plates are issued only after you have your CPR.
Four Winds ships cars and motorcycles alongside household moves through our vehicle shipping service. Before you book, make sure you have the papers listed in our car shipping documents guide.
